In a landmark ruling on Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail to human rights activist Olamide Thomas, setting the bond at ₦10 million alongside stringent conditions.
Thomas, who has been at the center of a controversial legal battle, is accused of defaming high-profile figures, including President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi, and senior police officials in a viral social media post.
The case, identified as suit number F/HE/ARS/CR/636/2024, was brought forward by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, listed as the complainant.
Thomas faces charges linked to alleged defamatory remarks against the IGP and Police Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi.
Delivering the ruling, Justice Emeka Nwite emphasized the absence of sufficient evidence to suggest that Thomas would abscond if granted bail. However, the court imposed strict conditions:
A surety in the same amount of ₦10 million.
The surety must present a three-year tax clearance certificate.
Reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide two recent passport photographs.
Submit an affidavit of means with their address duly verified by the authorities.
The trial has been adjourned until February 18, 2025.
Thomas’ defense team, led by Dr. S. M. Oyeghe and J. A. Ekwe, successfully argued the bail application, while the prosecution was notably absent during the hearing.
The case has sparked a wider debate about freedom of speech and the conduct of law enforcement in Nigeria. Advocacy groups have rallied behind Thomas, calling for the protection of human rights and an end to what they describe as intimidation tactics by authorities.
