Edo Guber: IGP Orders Restriction of Vehicular Movement, Enforces Security Measures
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered a complete restriction of vehicular movement across Edo State on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., as part of stringent security measures for the upcoming governorship election.
This directive includes roadways, waterways, and other modes of transportation, with the goal of ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
IGP Egbetokun, while announcing the comprehensive security measures, clarified that exceptions would be made for essential services, including accredited media, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders.
The order underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
A statement issued by Force headquarters on Friday elaborated on the measures.
According to the statement, all security aides and escorts accompanying VIPs to polling units and collation centres are banned, and unauthorized security personnel, including quasi-security outfits, are prohibited from operating during the election. The use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles is also strictly forbidden.
Additionally, the IGP emphasized that special provisions would be made for vulnerable groups such as individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges, ensuring that all polling stations, both urban and rural, are accessible.
The IGP has also advised citizens against making prank calls to the police control rooms and designated help numbers, urging them to use text messages for more efficient communication during the election.
Citizens can reach out for inquiries and reporting via the designated election lines:
- DIG Election, Frank Mba: 07025000383
- AIG Election, Benneth Igwe: 09085000029
- General control room numbers: 08077773721, 08037646272.
The already-activated joint control room will be manned by the police and other relevant agencies, who will oversee the electoral process.
In his statement, the IGP appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities or incidents that could compromise the election’s integrity. He also urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to behave responsibly and in accordance with electoral laws. Any attempts to disrupt the process will be met with the full force of the law.
The Inspector-General reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring a secure and democratic environment, stating, “Through collaborative efforts, we can guarantee that the forthcoming elections in Edo, and future ones, are conducted fairly and peacefully.”
