January Telecom Tariff Hike False — NCC
Kehinde Fajobi
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has refuted claims of an imminent telecommunications tariff hike allegedly scheduled for January 2025, describing the reports as baseless and misleading.
A senior NCC official, speaking to PUNCH on Sunday, assured subscribers that no tariff increase had been approved.
“These rumours are baseless and misleading. The NCC is committed to protecting consumers and ensuring that any potential tariff changes are communicated clearly and transparently,” the official said.
The official emphasised that the Commission operates under a transparent framework guided by the Nigerian Communications Act, which requires stakeholder consultations and due process before any tariff adjustments are made.
“Subscribers can rest assured that no tariff increase has been approved,” he added.
The NCC also called on journalists and industry stakeholders to verify information before publication to prevent unnecessary panic.
It reiterated its commitment to consumer interests, ensuring stability in the telecommunications industry, and promised to communicate updates on tariffs through official channels.
The Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS) also addressed the rumours.
Speaking in Lagos, ATCIS National President, Sina Bilesanmi, confirmed that the association sought clarification from the NCC on December 24, 2024.
“The NCC confirmed there is no truth to claims of call charges increasing to ₦15.40 per minute from ₦11, SMS charges rising to ₦5.60, or 1GB of data costing ₦1,400 instead of ₦1,000,” Bilesanmi stated.
He added, “Any changes in tariffs, if necessary, will follow due process and involve input from all stakeholders, including ATCIS. There is no cause for alarm.”
Both the NCC and ATCIS urged subscribers to rely on verified information from credible sources, reaffirming their commitment to protecting consumer interests.
