Mass Defection: Edo Council Chairmen, Councillors Join APC
Kehinde Fajobi
The political landscape in Edo State witnessed a shift as the chairmen of Ovia South West and Owan West local government areas, both of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with their councillors, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday.
Hon. Edosa Enowoghomenma of Ovia South West LGA, alongside eight councillors, including the Leader of the House, Hon. Nosakhare Edobor, joined the APC to support Governor Monday Okpebholo’s developmental agenda.
Enowoghomenma stated, “We have thought it wise to pitch tent with the APC in Ovia South West LGA, to work harmoniously with our governor, Distinguished Sen Monday Okpebholo, and our son, the deputy governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa. Hon. Dennis is not a stranger to us; he is a blessing to Ovia South West.”
Hon. Edobor added, “We are not under duress. We are here to join the ruling party to bring about renewed hope and ensure development in Ovia South West.”
In Owan West, Hon. Dickson Ahonsi and five councillors also joined the APC, citing Governor Okpebholo’s impactful governance.
“His activities on the assumption of office were impressive, and the projects he has embarked upon show Edo is in safe hands,” Ahonsi said.
The defectors were received by APC leaders, including State Secretary Engr. Lawrence Okah and LGA Chairman Emmanuel Ogbomo. Okah welcomed them, stating, “The doors of the party are open to receive more defectors. Use the broom to mobilise others to join us.”
Ogbomo assured the new members they would be treated equally and protected. “In the APC, everybody is treated equally, and you will not regret your action,” he said.
The defections come amid ongoing tensions between council executives and Governor Okpebholo, highlighting shifting alliances in Edo State politics.
