Massive gridlock as Lagos shuts Ojuelegba road to avert disaster over gas leakage
A massive gas leakage from a truck conveying the substance between Ojuelegba and Stadium on Ikorodu Road, Lagos on Saturday led to the temporal closure of the road to avert an explosion.
Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu. told PM NEWS that upon arrival at the incident scene, a truck conveying a gas tanker/cylinder laden, fully loaded with 22 tonnes of cooking gas was found to be leaking its contents into the environment.
“No life was lost and no injuries sustained to anyone as a result of the incident but the gas vapour was gushing out copiously and uncontrollably into the environment,” he said.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, traffic flow in and out of the entire axis had to be halted, while residents in the area were adequately sensitised to avoid any form of naked flame in order to avoid an explosion or fire outbreak because of the risk at hand.
He said the attempts to fully seal the truck were unsuccessful, saying that the truck had been escorted to its depot in Apapa by the Federal Fire, Lagos State Fire Services and the Nigeria Policemen where controlled transloading of the contents was being done.
