Retired Anglican Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi, Godwin Okpala, has resurfaced nearly a month after being declared missing in Anambra State.
Professor Okpala and his driver were reported missing on 6 December during a journey to Umuchu. Their disappearance sparked concerns and speculations of abduction.
On Thursday morning, Okpala confirmed his return in a brief Facebook post, writing, “Praise The Lord!”
Hours later, the Anglican Church announced his release on its official Facebook page. “Breaking News: Archbishop Godwin Okpala and driver safely released,” the statement read.
The church expressed joy over the development, describing it as “a testament to the power of faith, prayer, and community solidarity.”
The statement also highlighted the need for improved security in the South-East, calling for police reforms and the implementation of state and community policing systems.
“Strengthening security measures remains critical to safeguarding lives and restoring peace in the region,” it added.
The church urged continued prayers for peace and security, noting, “This event serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to create a safer and more compassionate society for all.”
Details of the cleric’s disappearance and return remain unclear at the time of this report.
