NANS Denies Organizing Protest Against Petrol Price Increase

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has firmly denied claims that it organized a protest against the recent increase in petrol prices.

On Wednesday, a statement purportedly from NANS went viral, announcing plans to shut down major cities across Nigeria starting from September 15, 2024, in response to the price hike.

The statement also demanded the reversal of the petrol price and the removal of Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd.

However, Afeez Akinteye, NANS Senate President, has labeled the statement as false and called on security agencies to investigate the source of the misinformation.

“We strongly urge the public, the media, and all stakeholders to disregard these false reports. The individuals or groups behind these rumors are faceless entities who seek to exploit the name of NANS for their malicious purposes,” Akinteye stated.

He emphasized that the intention behind the false statement was to destabilize the country and create unnecessary tension among citizens.

Akinteye further clarified that NANS disassociates itself from any such plans or intentions and reiterated that the organization remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students through peaceful and lawful means.

He urged security agencies to act decisively in identifying and holding accountable those responsible for spreading the false information, emphasizing that using the NANS name to incite unrest is a serious threat to national security and the integrity of the association.

NANS reaffirmed its dedication to pursuing positive change for students through constructive channels and called for unity, peace, and progress in the nation.
