Nigerian Navy Strengthens Ties with Host Communities Through Free Medical Services

The Nigerian Navy is ramping up its efforts to strengthen collaboration with its host communities in the fight against criminal activities on the nation’s waterways.

This initiative was underscored by a recent visit to Bolowo community in Ondo South Senatorial District, where the Navy provided free medical services to over 2,000 residents.

Captain Aliyu Usman, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda, led the medical outreach, emphasizing the importance of building strong partnerships with local communities for effective intelligence sharing.

This, he explained, is vital for combating crime on the waters and ensuring the security of the nation’s maritime and oil sector assets.

In a speech during the event, Captain Usman highlighted the Navy’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence in host communities, not just through security efforts, but also through initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the people.

He reiterated that the Navy’s focus on community relations and support services, such as healthcare, is integral to fostering trust and cooperation between the military and the people they serve.

“The Nigerian Navy is committed to forming a cordial relationship with host communities.

Our goal is to enhance the safety of lives and property, especially within the vital oil sector and other key national assets,” Captain Usman stated.

The medical outreach, part of the Navy’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, aimed to address the lack of health facilities in the Igbokoda community and surrounding areas.

The services offered included routine check-ups, provision of medication, health education, distribution of insecticide-treated nets, free medicated eye glasses, and vaccination for children.

Residents and local leaders expressed their gratitude for the Navy’s efforts, praising the initiative as a much-needed step toward improving healthcare access in the area.

Community leaders noted that such support goes a long way in fostering goodwill and cooperation between the people and the Navy.

The Nigerian Navy’s ongoing outreach is a testament to its holistic approach to security and community engagement, as the organization continues to tackle maritime crime while addressing the everyday needs of the communities it serves.

The initiative is expected to be expanded to other areas as part of the Navy’s broader strategy to maintain both security and community welfare in the region.
