Police Sound Alarm on Misuse of IG’s Office by Officers
The Office of the Inspector General of Police has sounded a critical alarm over the misuse of the IG’s office by certain unscrupulous police personnel, who exploit it to extort unsuspecting members of the public.
This unsettling revelation came through a statement issued by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
In his address, Adejobi shed light on the persistent abuse of the Inspector General’s office, emphasizing the Nigeria Police Force’s deep concern over the unprofessional behavior of a minority within its ranks.
Such actions, he noted, tarnish the reputation and standards of the institution.
Despite repeated warnings and disciplinary measures, Adejobi lamented, some officers continue to indulge in disgraceful activities that erode public trust.
Particularly alarming, he revealed, is the fraudulent use of the IG’s name and office by some personnel to intimidate and exploit victims.
“The intention behind this tactic is to make victims believe the IGP is complicit or supportive of their illegal actions,” he stated.
This strategy often deters victims from seeking redress or reporting these incidents to appropriate authorities.
To counter these acts, Adejobi urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any misconduct by police officers.
He directed complaints to be lodged with their superiors, Heads of Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their respective states, or directly with the State Commissioner of Police.
He also reassured the public of the availability of CRU contact information previously circulated for easy access.
As part of proactive measures, Adejobi shared critical contact details for reporting suspicious activities:
DCP Akin Fakorede, Head, IGP Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08184077076
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08037168147
CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head, IGP Special Investigation Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08069318238
SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC to the IGP – 08094712605
He further advised Nigerians to exercise caution when approached by anyone claiming ties to the IGP or other senior officers under the guise of influence or favors.
In closing, Adejobi affirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to uphold integrity and professionalism.
“We assure all Nigerians of our dedication to justice and fairness. Collaborate with us by reporting any suspicious activities to ensure that law and order prevail,” he stated.
