Stampedes: Obi Urges IGP to Reconsider Restrictions on Charity Distribution
Kehinde Fajobi
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the restriction on palliative distribution, arguing that it may discourage individuals and organisations from engaging in charitable acts.
Obi’s remarks came after multiple stampedes during food distributions in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday, which left scores dead and many injured.
The incidents prompted the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to direct organisers of similar events to collaborate with security agencies and adhere to safety protocols.
Describing the directive as “disturbing,” Obi expressed concerns over its potential misuse.
“While I understand the need for better organisation and public safety, acts of goodwill should not be hindered by excessive bureaucracy,” he stated in a post on X on Monday.
The former governor of Anambra State acknowledged the IGP’s intention to ensure safety but stressed that the directive could stifle compassion during a time of widespread hunger and distress.
Obi said, “Rather than requiring people to seek permission to assist those in need, we should encourage them to find better, more organised ways to offer such help.
“The focus should be on promoting coordination, not imposing barriers that could deter much-needed acts of kindness.”
He called for a constructive approach to managing charitable efforts, ensuring that aid reaches vulnerable populations safely and efficiently.
Obi also urged the Federal Government to tackle the root causes of hardship.
“This is not the time to stifle the spirit of compassion and generosity among our people. Instead, let us channel these efforts constructively to alleviate suffering,” he added.
Criticising the government’s policies, he stated, “Rather than creating obstacles for those stepping in to fill the gaps created by the government’s insensitive policies, lasting solutions must be provided.”
Obi appealed to the IGP to reconsider the directive, emphasising collaboration over restrictions.
“I urge the IGP to immediately review this directive and ensure that the police fosters collaboration and support, not division and discouragement, in our shared quest to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians,” he concluded.
