Supreme Court Affirms Uzodinma’s Reelection as Imo Gov
On Friday, August 23, the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld the reelection of Governor Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the Governor of Imo State.
The ruling came in response to an appeal filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Athan Achonu, challenging the outcome of the gubernatorial election.
In a unanimous decision, a five-member panel of the apex court dismissed the appeal, with Justice Mohammed Baba Idris delivering the lead judgment.
Justice Idris addressed all three issues raised by the appellants, concluding that they failed to meet the burden of proof required to substantiate their claims.
The Supreme Court’s ruling aligns with the earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal, which had affirmed the decision of the election tribunal to dismiss the appellants’ petition.
As the court delivered its judgment on the Labour Party’s appeal, it also began hearing the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Samuel Anyanwu, against the election results.
