Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation of Kekere-Ekun As CJN
President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Nigerian Senate to confirm Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The request was presented in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the Senate’s session on Tuesday.
Justice Kekere-Ekun has been serving as the acting CJN since August, following the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. Her appointment in an acting capacity was made by President Tinubu, who has now asked the Senate to officially confirm her in line with constitutional provisions.
In his letter, Tinubu cited Section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint a Chief Justice upon the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), and subject to Senate confirmation.
“I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun CON for confirmation as CJN,” Tinubu stated. He expressed his confidence that the Senate would expedite the confirmation process.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s nomination marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s judicial history, as she is poised to become the second woman to serve as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
