Tragic Collision on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge Claims Driver’s Life, Injure Seven
In a distressing incident on Monday, a bus driver tragically lost his life, and seven others were injured following a collision involving two commercial buses on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State. The accident occurred around 12:16 PM on the Oworonsoki-bound section of the bridge.
According to Nosa Okunbor, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the collision was caused by a combination of mechanical failure and speeding. Specifically, a failure in the brakes of one of the buses, coupled with excessive speed, resulted in the vehicle losing control and crashing into the bus in front.
LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team was promptly dispatched to the scene following distress calls received at 12:16 PM. They arrived at the location by 12:36 PM to find that two Toyota Hi-Ace buses, with registration numbers EKY 804 YH and LND 624 YE, were involved in the crash.
The incident led to the unfortunate death of the driver of the rear bus, while seven passengers sustained various degrees of injuries. Emergency medical personnel from LASAMBUS administered first aid at the scene before transporting the injured to the Trauma Center in Gbagada for further treatment.
The collision highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and vehicle maintenance, as authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
