Youths Defy Curfew in Jigawa State Amid Ongoing Protests

Despite the imposition of a 24-hour curfew by the Jigawa State government, hundreds of youths returned to the streets of Dutse, the state capital, on Friday.

The curfew was declared following widespread violence and destruction on the first day of the nationwide protests.

Clashes erupted as security agencies engaged with protesters in the Zai area of the city, according to report by Daily Trust.

A resident of Zai quarters, who requested anonymity, reported that security operatives struggled to prevent the youths from setting up roadblocks.

“They have refused to retreat despite the teargas thrown at them by the security personnel,” the resident said.

In Shuwarin, a town on the outskirts of Dutse, protesters regrouped and continued their demonstrations.

“The protesters are attempting to get into the main parts of the state capital but are being restricted by security operatives,” an eyewitness in Shuwarin reported.

The police have arrested several youths, including under-aged boys, according to ThePressNG.

In contrast, the situation in Gumel town remained relatively calm as security forces effectively blocked major roads to prevent further protests.

Efforts to obtain information from other areas such as Hadeji, Birnin Kudu, Jahun, and Kazaure were unsuccessful due to poor communication network conditions at the time of reporting.
